(no subject)
Name: Lahabrea (originally Hephaistos)
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Age: unknown, but his people are implied to easily live for centuries. He himself has a fully grown son, and appears to be the equivalent of somewhere in the 50-60s at least
Gender: Male
Species: Ancient (functionally human, but incredibly long-lived)
Appearance: like so!
Canon point: Immediately after he, Emet-Selch, and Elidibus escape into the Rift in the wake of the Sundering
History: Here! anything after the 'early life' section has not happened for him as of his canon point.
Personality answers:
2) Explain which event in canon is most pivotal to your character's development, and who they are today. The single moment that has had the most influence on Lahabrea as he is now is the betrayal of his (now ex-)wife Athena. A woman of a similar scholarly bent to Lahabrea himself, being a researcher in the same field Lahabrea himself worked on, they became close through their work. From there, love kindled, and grew into a relationship. One that even saw the two of them raise a son together.
And so it might have continued, Lahabrea fully believing the relationship to be an equal share of love, had he not had cause to enter into what amounts to a soul meld with Athena. A moment during which he was confronted with the truth: Athena loved none but herself. Not Lahabrea himself, nor even their son.
What we know of Lahabrea before that moment is limited. But what we do see is enough to make some assumptions - in addition to shattering his trust in her, the Lahabrea of the current era seems largely disinclined to let much of anyone close. This is not uncommon in his society, but he takes beyond even the norm, to the point that he's directly mentioned to be less than personable. The echo of that moment also lingers on throughout the time we spend with Lahabrea; repeatedly carried on into the future and brought to (even when Lahabrea might not wish it to be so and each time he is shown to not care for it). Nor are the scars easily mended, to the point we see them impacting not just his own life and decisions, but the relationship with his son, from whom he kept much of the truth until matters finally forced his hand.
3) Your character must live with only one sense for a year. They are allowed to choose. What do they pick? Why? How do they cope?
Sight. Though the question of which to choose would likely be one that Lahabrea took considerable pains to consider all the relevant angles of, he is, at his core, a scholar and a sorcerer both. Without access to his sight he would have neither the ability to continue his scholarly pursuits nor be able to see what he means to cast spells at.
More immediately relevantly, the society in which he has spent the whole of his life living in does not appear to have any sort of support mechanisms for accommodating those with any sort of physical disability. (In fact, we do not see any characters who are missing a sense.) To render himself blind would thus be something Lahabrea would be fully unable to hide. And it would be his intention to hide the absence of his other senses. That a year is but the blink of an eye in a society where all the individuals present have lifespans that can be counted in centuries would help lessen his difficulties. But even so, while the absence of taste could be written off and he very rarely initiates physical touch anyway... the absence of his hearing would prove difficult. Likely, he would treat it much the same as he does any other difficulty. Stubbornly pressing on with what is available to him, regardless of should it be feasible and never mind seeking out assistance besides. But ultimately, he would deem even that difficulty better than blinding himself.
7) What is your character's biggest ambition at their current canon point? To what lengths would they go to see it to fruition?
As of his current canon point, Lahabrea's ambitions are, functionally, on hold. He has only just escaped the destruction of his own world and has not, yet, had time to see what has come of that destruction before finding himself suddenly pulled away to another world. That said, Lahabrea is above else a man driven by duty. To his people and to his star, and though his ambitions may be currently on pause both before and after his canon point his desires directly align with this same sense of duty. Prior to the moments before the destruction of his world, his goal was simply to see the Final Days ended. To bring an end to the calamity; a goal he followed with unwavering dedication until at last he came up with the concept of what would essentially become a god. The will of the star, manifested to save his world from destruction.
In the centuries following his canon point, that goal will shift instead to seeing his world reborn by whatever means, a task he will follow with exactly the same amount of dedication (and no small amount of fanaticism besides)
His personal ambitions - and he does have them for all that he puts duty first - mostly lie in ever seeking to improve his understanding of creation magic and its applications. In striving to better his own command of same, and bring into being greater wonders. In all three cases, he chases these ambitions with a single-minded stubbornness. Once he has decided on a course of action, he will follow it through without a second thought and though he may suffer setbacks there is very little that can sway him from that course.
8) What would it take to truly upset your character, enough that they would act upon their feelings? Are they the sort to forgive? To address what it would take to truly upset Lahabrea, we have to return to the moment of betrayal mentioned earlier. To his discovery of the fact that Athena loved no one but herself. Or rather, to the moments just prior, when Lahabrea had arrived at Athena's place of work and discovered that she intended to use their own son as a vessel by which she might ascend to godhood. Unsurprisingly, that fact alone already had Lahabrea deeply displeased. Learning that she had never cared for him and that seeing the full truth of her soul would mean forever carrying a seed of the corrupting influence that had spurred her goals was enough to spur him into directly acting on his anger and displeasure. In this case, splitting his own soul in two that he might remove the tainted portion of it and then seeing to Athena's death himself.
Some time later - possibly centuries, though it's not stated - he has neither forgiven nor forgotten. He is, in a sense, too stubborn to forgive. Even the suggestion that some fragment of Athena's influence might escape out into the world beyond where once she had worked is enough to spur him into impulsive action in a bid to contain it.
In cases where that do not involve his ex-wife, we see him most directly respond with irritation to personal jabs and things that otherwise poke at his sense of pride. Especially when something has already grown to near an argument. His stubbornness will not easily allow him to back down, and he's possessed of what he describes as an unbending will besides.
Inventory:
-The Heart of Sabik. A black crystal about the size of Lahabrea's palm that is made of auracite, a material that amplifies the desires of the wielder over time until they become all-consuming. It also holds the power to cast a extremely magic spell - Ultima - although the one time we see Lahabrea do this, it's only after the Heart of Sabik has been "woken up" by first feeding it a vast amount of magical energy harvested from highly magical beings. At his current canon point, Lahabrea is neither aware of its ability to channel Ultima nor would be inclined to. Confiscated by Patho-Gen
-a small red crystal, shaped like so. Formerly held fragments of Lahabrea's soul, currently inert and likely to remain so.
-one red mask, worn on his face on arrival
Powers/Abilities:
-Sorcery-
Like many of the people of his world, Lahabrea is an accomplished sorcerer. While we only directly see Lahabrea use fire magic (and later darkness magic), it stands to reason that he would be familiar with the other elemental magics of his world - ice, lightning, light, earth, and wind. He is also familiar with a sort of temporal magic, though this is mostly used specifically in regards to interment magic (see below). Finally, while he almost certainly does not consider himself to be a healer and is not shown to use healing magic at any point, he no doubt understands the theory behind its use even if he may not necessarily be able to use it himself. (I tend to headcanon him as being capable of it, but not beyond more than the very basics)
He is also capable of a form of teleportation and is able to see magical energy to a degree.
-Creation magic-
A form of magic that Lahabrea is uncommonly good at, which is the act of creating whatever one desires out of willpower and magical energy. There are, however, several restrictions on how it works. First, it cannot be used to create anything with a soul. It also requires both that the individual casting the spell have a full and complete understanding of that they wish to create and no small amount of focus besides - there are several occasions where even a stray thought has been noted to dramatically alter a creation.
-Interment-
A form of magic whose foundation was established by Lahabrea, this is used within Pandaemonium in order to keep the often-dangerous creations studied there comparatively docile and comes in two forms. Aetherial shackles, which temporarily bind the target, and interment, which freezes the space around a subject for as long as the caster wills it.
-The Echo-
"The Echo" is something catch-all term the game uses to cover a variety of effects, the most immediately noticeable of which - the ability to understand all spoken language - is rendered largely moot here. Beyond this, the Echo allows him the ability to see the past through either someone's memories or the imprints left behind in the ambient aether of a location. Both, however, require specific and deliberate intention, and are best focused by memories of strong emotions.
-Scholarly Knowledge-
While we have fewer direct mentions of Lahabrea's scholarly accomplishments as compared to his magical prowess, he is nonetheless directly mentioned to be a renowned orator, and it is further implied that all the members of the Convocation are "sages of surpassing intellect." And indeed, what reports we do have suggest that Lahabrea is exceedingly knowledgeable when it comes to creation specifically and he is unlikely to have let that be the whole of his knowledge. We do, additionally, know that he worked very closely with the Words of Lahabrea - a branch of Akadaemia Anyder, which serves as at least one of the larger centers of education of his world- and served as mentor to at least some of the individuals studying there.
He also has enough of a solid understanding of the inner workings of magic to help establish a whole new branch of magic, which isn't nothing.
